Why do we have so many project management web apps? March 12, 2009

I just got another tip on a new online project management application. Usual pitch of collaboration, some nifty ‘unique’ feature, etc. etc.
Urgh.
I’ve seen so many project management, task scheduling applications online that I’m beginning to wonder if I’m missing the plot. What I see is 50 companies trying to solve the same problem with no so much ‘actual’ differentiation.
So what can be the reason for this?
Two possibilities I think.
1. Really big market
1.1 It’s difficult to reach everyone
1.2 It’s growing really fast so it’s land grab time
2. No one has solved the problem yet
2.1 It’s a big problem
2.2 The market needs are diverse, so one product cannot deliver for everyone’s needs
Of the above, I think 1.2 applies here. And 1.1 to a smaller extent as a common message may not match all audiences.
More interesting is 2. Personally I think everyone considers the problem has not been ‘properly’ solved yet. It is the hallmark of project management discipline. There is no one single way to execute and manage projects. Everyone thinks their way is better and bring their own ‘twist’ to the subject.
So in reality, there could be a thousands of ways to execute projects therefore there can be as many applications doing it with some or other little feature adjustment.
However, I’m finding it difficult to see the difference between all these applications from their websites. Everyone is trying to be a second basecamp with some more features that really don’t mean much for a user like myself.
Looks like even though the market needs are so diverse (based on some quirks in their work flow pattern) the companies are not really good at picking them out or the market itself is not really thinking along those differentiation lines. OR the market does not know what they want until they’ve tried one web product and yearn for another feature or two.
It’ll be interesting to get some insight on how the guys in these PM tool companies are thinking about this.
An utopian democracy November 3, 2008

The US votes tomorrow. Hopefully they elect the right candidate. He speaks of a democracy where every one is heard. Many more promised the same before, but for the first time I think it is now achievable because of the web.
I was watching Obama’s technology policies as posted on TechCrunch, and then read yesterday about Jimmy wales saying public collaboration is in its infancy. Jimmy Wales continued on to give an example of Video as another form where collaboration can happen where people may come together to create complex content.
As more and more information is contributed and made available especially in reusable formats, we start seeing transparency in many things. And truth (or the perceived truth) normally bubbles to the top when you have the public involved in creating and reacting to this content.
What excites me the most is that we are building a product that is going to be contributing to the same phenomena. The ability to create rich diagrams/designs and models and the ability to collaborate on these things online is something that is sorely lacking today. While wikipedia is great for its text as Wales says there’s Audio, Video and of course…. pictures/diagrams.
That’s where Creately comes in. Rich visual collaboration. Exciting times ahead.
When things look bad… Take action October 25, 2008

This is the 2nd post on this blog and it’s been coming for the last 2 weeks.
Needless to say, the last two weeks were scary and shocking. Everyone is forecasting doom and gloom for the global economies, a deep and long recession and so on. No need to remind anyone, there’s plenty of coverage everywhere.
What does matter commenting on is what goes on in a small pre-revenue start-up like ours. We’ve been forewarned that a downturn is inevitable from as early as last year. And we’ve always been conscious about what sort of product we are building and how it’s going to sustain and hopefully thrive in a tough economic climate.
We’ve focused on identifying instances where we can cut cost, deliver extra value and support revenue generation for our customers. We’ve been witnessing the exodus from desktop software to SaaS over the course of 2008, and have been optimistic of the chances for Creately.
But we didn’t expect the economic situation to get this bad this fast. I call what we are seeing as just panic. Intelligent people are running around like headless chicken driven by short term fears and now that it has hit critical mass, for the rest of the investors who were keeping their heads cool are being compelled to join the masses.
As soon as it hit, we went back to our estimates and started doing numbers. We looked at costs of R&D, cut as much marketing as possible and significantly brought down our timelines and expectations for revenue.
And as the markets went from bad to worse, we kept going back to numbers. The 3rd time we started doing this, we figured, that it’s not going to help. We just had to watch and wait. Wait till the storm ends and move from there.
So what do we do while the storm rages? We cut cost where we can. And started putting full effort on what matters. Getting Creately out to our target markets. We reshuffled our priorities and have started to operate with more focused goals that are driven by quick and visible wins.
Is that the best approach? Yes.
Why? Because we are doing something about the crisis. Watching and waiting, hoping the world will get better is not going to work.
Taking decisive action is what will get people through this bad situation. And we certainly are taking ours. I’m glad I’m in good company during difficult times.
Why connecting smarts? October 10, 2008

I had to do this sometime. Starting my own blog. There is so much to share at this time it is unjust not to.
Connecting Smarts is the name I picked after deliberating for a whole of 2 minutes. It was so easy to figure it out because that’s what I’ve been good at my whole life. Bringing things together. Bringing disparate ideas, mashing them up, linking them and making something better, more useful out of it.
Earlier this was around technology. Later on this became more with people, ideas which eventually led to Cinergix. Cinergix is a company that I started with Nick foster and Charanjit Singh last year to bring to market a solution around visual design. Our first output is Creately which we launched a couple of weeks back. What drives Cinergix and myself is the vision that we have for this space. While its a bit too early to share it out with the public at this point, if we are able to execute it to its fullest potential it is definitely a game changer for a number of industries.
I have already been blogging at the official cinergix blog a while back, but I have started this blog to be a more personal outlet of my thoughts around topics that may span beyond Cinergix.
We’ll have to wait and see what those thoughts are and hope you find my thoughts useful or at the least interesting.
